Tribute to Zanardi
On Sunday May 11, 2003, half an hour before the start of the race, the team wheeled the car onto the front straight with Zanardi in the cockpit, hit the remote starter switch, and the Cosworth engine screamed to life under Zanardi's left thumb. After one warmup, check-out lap, Zanardi turned the car loose on the track that cost him his legs and his career. He turned faster and faster laps as he became more and more comfortable with the controls. On the 13th and last lap of his personal race against the Lausitz speedway, he hit 194.5 mph, good enough for fifth place on the race grid.
After he had pushed himself up out of the cockpit, Zanardi said, "It was flat-out. That's it. I can't say pedal to the metal because I had a little button for my thumb, but that's all there was. It was great again just to feel the speed and some of the downforce. I did this because life goes on, and I'm moving on to other things. I'm pretty proud of the job I've done. Maybe I showed that I could do it again, at some level, but from here on, I will be a fan, nothing more."
VIDEO - Alex completes the last 13 laps
Here is my personal tribute of the monumental 13 laps Zanardi completed on his return to the track at Euro Speedway. This conversion includes the cockpit modifications that Champ Car had made to help make his return easier after the accident. The cockpit was made with help from some awesome pictures sent to me from Germany by Lars and Markus. Some pictures were actually taken by them on that day in May and without their help, I couldn't achieve what needed to be done.

The car started life as a 2001 Pioneer Da Matta, but with all the work needed to fabricate the rear of the car, I had to strip it and repaint it. The car was fabricated perfect. Factory mold looks like it was never touched. PPG came through on the paint match for me, and I have to thank everyone who has waited on me and this delay. This was a car going to Alex and I spent the entire month working this through. I want to thank my wife Patricia for spending extra time with the kids and being patient. This is what its all about for me and open wheel racing. If I quit tomorrow, this was worth everything, for me and for Alex and his fans. Nothing I'll ever do will top this one.
I want to give Earl Ma a special "THANK YOU" for the awesome work he did on the decals for this project!
This is the special design made by Mark (Marksman Decals & Sign Junkies) made for me and this special project. Its a special domed sticker commerating the event. I made the plastic display, adding some carbon fiber, but this really makes a nice display piece to have next to the car on display.
